Throughout the two-day meeting (22.09.2015 &#8211; 24.09.2015) held in Horsley Park, UK, young researchers had a unique opportunity for active interactions with experts in the field. By showing their latest results and discussing conundrums that have arisen along the way, ITN PhD students gained fresh yet critical insights into their projects, along with suggestions to broaden their work towards more realistic applications. For years numerous reports have been focused on this area to establish a comprehensive understanding of membrane structures. More recently, the development of modern experimental techniques, such as small-angle X-ray scattering, small-angle neutron&#160;scattering and cyro-TEM, provides more&#160;powerful tools for this study. In addition to&#160;experimental study, theoretical models and computational simulations also contribute to broadening the scope of this field. Charged macromolecules can self-assemble&#160;and aggregate into compact intermolecular complexes. This ability of oppositely charged polymers to form&#160;finite size complexes determines their biological function,&#160;which for example is important in gene transfection and compactization&#160;of DNA, that provide promising alternatives to&#160;viral vectors. Such macromolecular systems, where electrostatic forces are usually stronger than van der Waals or hydrogen&#160;bonds, exhibit rich behavior and structural variability.&#160;The structures formed by opposite charges are usually&#160;more stable than neutral block copolymers micelles dissociating&#160;upon dilution or slight change in the external conditions.
